About Fluree Labs
Where open Fluree lives
Fluree Labs is the open-source, research, and community home of Fluree — the team building the semantic, governed data layer that makes AI outputs trustworthy, explainable, and auditable. This is where we develop in the open: the database, the tools, the benchmarks, and the research that come out of that work, free for anyone to use, fork, and build on.
We're not a separate organization. Labs is simply how Fluree does its open work — the public side of a company that believes the infrastructure underneath AI should be inspectable and shared.
Why we do this
Enterprise AI fails for a reason nobody talks about: the data layer. Fragmented systems, missing context, and undocumented meaning quietly undermine everything built on top. AI is only as good as the data behind it — and most data isn't ready to be trusted.
So we work on the foundation. We believe structured, verifiable, and interoperable data should be the basis of every AI system — knowledge that is governable, queryable, and provable before it ever reaches a model. Answers you can defend, with citations and lineage included, instead of probabilistic guesses.
That conviction is also why Fluree is a Public Benefit Corporation: we're structured to balance customer success, the public good, and sustainable growth. Open standards and open source aren't a marketing layer for us — they're how you build data infrastructure that organizations can actually own and trust. Interoperability, not proprietary silos.
What we do
Engineering
We build and maintain Fluree DB, a semantic graph database with an immutable ledger — combining the expressiveness of RDF/JSON-LD with the integrity guarantees of an append-only architecture. Security and governance live at the data layer, so permissions and provenance travel with the data itself.
Research
We publish benchmarks, technical papers, and open-source tools that advance the state of semantic data infrastructure. Our research focuses on:
- GraphRAG — improving LLM accuracy through knowledge graph-enhanced retrieval
- Data Provenance — cryptographic verification of data lineage and integrity
- Semantic Interoperability — making data portable and meaningful across systems
Community
We believe in open standards and open source. Our tools, benchmarks, and research are freely available, and Fluree is built on W3C standards — JSON-LD, RDF, SPARQL, OWL, and SHACL. We actively contribute to the standards for Verifiable Credentials, JSON-LD, and SPARQL because portable, meaningful data shouldn't depend on any one vendor.
